Industry leaders in housing seem to agree on one thing: today's homebuyers want to spend less time in their cars and more time walking to neighborhood amenities, according to a recent WSJ.com article.
At the International Builder's Show (an annual event sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders), the panels discuss how builder's can meet the needs of Gen Y and Boomers - the two largest segments expected to be in the market for new homes in the coming years.
Proximity to shopping, dining and transit is of paramount importance and it seems that "drive till you qualify" is on its way out.
Other preferences include small outdoor spaces for grilling (that don't involve lawn maintenance), nearby fitness facilities, open entertaining spaces, and architecture with distinctive character (no cookie cutter designs).
